In a new appearance on The New York Times’ “Popcast,” Travis Barker opened up about guiding his son Landon Barker as he navigates fame and the music industry. The Blink-182 drummer recalled recently advising Landon to turn down an offer to appear on the singing competition series “The Voice.”
“My son called me the other day and he’s like, ‘Hey, they offered me to go on The Voice.’ I was like, ‘Dude, you’re way too cool for that. […] You got to think about your idols. If your idol is Kurt Cobain, would Kurt Cobain do The Voice? No. I know you’re in a rush to get to here, but take your time. It’s gonna happen,’” Travis said.
“I’m in the studio with him, I hear the songs that he’s creating. I’m, like, ‘There’s no rush. Do things that are authentic to you,’” he added.
Addressing his own past appearances on “American Idol,” Travis explained why he considers his situation different.
“And I have to tell him, because I’m like, ‘Also, son, you could think I’m being contradicting because you’ve seen me play drums on “American Idol” with Mary J. Blige, whatever. I’m different. I’m a drummer,” he said. “And my flex is going from genre to genre, and this person and this person, and playing the Grammys with Lenny Kravitz and Her. I’m doing fun sh*t that’s just fun for me ’cause I’m a drummer and I’m not on the forefront. It’d be different if I was singing with all these people.”
