Former Metallica bassist Ron McGovney recently confirmed that he was not invited to Black Sabbath’s final show. This confirmation came through a recent exchange shared on X.
The revelation came as a response to a direct question from a fan about whether McGovney received an invitation to the Black Sabbath event.
When asked “Ron, they invite you to the Black Sabbath event?” McGovney responded simply: “No.”
McGovney had served as Metallica’s bassist from 1982 to 1983 but he was replaced by Cliff Burton. The brief exchange highlights the ongoing distance between the former band member and his ex-bandmates regarding significant music industry events.
This exclusion highlights a longstanding pattern of estrangement that has persisted for decades since McGovney’s departure from the band.
McGovney’s time in Metallica was characterized by significant tension. He frequently clashed with bandmates Lars Ulrich and Dave Mustaine, feeling more like a source of financial support and transportation than a respected member of the group. His departure in December 1982 followed growing frustrations with his role in the band, contributing to his decision to leave before they achieved mainstream success.
After leaving Metallica, McGovney largely stepped away from the music industry. According to Ultimate Metallica, he sold most of his musical equipment and distanced himself from the metal scene that would eventually elevate his former bandmates to global superstardom.
