In July, drummer Matt Cameron unexpectedly announced his decision to leave Pearl Jam. In a statement regarding his departure, Cameron wrote:
“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. Much love and respect to Jeff [Ament], Ed [Vedder], Mike [McCready] and Stone [Gossard] for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, one filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter. […] It’s been an incredible journey. […] Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
Since then, there has been some question as to who Pearl Jam may hire as his replacement.
One name that continues to come up among speculating fans is seasoned drummer Josh Freese, whose impressive resume features a plethora of heavy hitters including Nine Inch Nails, Foo Fighters, A Perfect Circle, Devo, Sting, The Vandals, and many more.
Now, in a new interview with The New York Times, Freese is addressing the possibility of joining Eddie Vedder and co.
While he admits he doesn’t know if he will receive an offer from Pearl Jam or if opportunities with other bands will arise, Freese told the publication: “But whatever happens, I’m going to be out there playing. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”
Freese recently made headlines when he was fired from Foo Fighters less than two years after joining the band. Replacing Freese, the Dave Grohl fronted band have hired Nine Inch Nails’ drummer Ilan Rubin.
Ironically, to replace Rubin, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has called on Freese. The ever-busy musician previously played with NIN from 2005 to 2008 before leaving in order to spend more time with his family.
