Following the death of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022, Foo Fighters announced Josh Freese as their new drummer in 2023. Two years later, in May, Freese revealed that he had been let go from the band, saying only that they had decided “to go in a different direction with their drummer.”
Aside from a tongue-in-cheek “Top 10 Possible Reasons Freese Got Booted From the Foos” list shared to Instagram, the drummer has largely remained silent about the circumstances surrounding his firing.
Now, during a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s “Trunk Nation with Eddie Trunk,” Freese was asked if he knows why Dave Grohl and co. let him go, and whether he has gained any clarity on the matter since his departure from the band.
“Not really,” he said, before explaining his reluctance to publicly comment on his firing.
“I mean, I’ve got a couple of theories, but I feel like people are so interested in that because they’re such a massive band that I’m kind of hesitant to comment at all about it yet because anything I say is gonna be used and thrown around and republished and reposted.”
“But, yeah, I loved my time I spent down there,” Freese added. “I had a great couple of years with those guys.”
In an August interview with The New York Times, Freese did admit that he was blindsided by the decision, suggesting that “it was probably more an issue with their management,” but declined to comment further. He also noted that “it wasn’t music that I really resonated with.”
