Tool’s drummer Danny Carey and Foo Fighters’ drummer Josh Freese were recently spotted together. Carey took to his Instagram and posted a couple of photos. His caption read:
“Always great to hang with my homie @joshfreese, who goes way back with Adrian and Tony’s tech, the legendary Thomas Nordegg.”
As per Danny Carey, there’s one setlist-related challenge that he had to deal with on the current tour. In late last year, the legendary prog metal band started their run in North America. As Carey told Rick Beato in an recent interview, the setlist is pretty much Maynard James Keenan’s idea. And there’s a good reason for that.
“We pretty much let Maynard decide the setlist,” the drummer said. “I mean, obviously, we’re playing a lot of the ‘Fear Inoculum’ stuff now. Whatever the current record is, is gonna take precedence. But when it comes to the older songs, it’s kind of what Maynard’s voice can handle. He’s no spring chicken either.”
“It’s a lot harder when your instrument is your body,” Danny added. And yeah, that makes perfect sense. Nonetheless, playing drums isn’t the easiest thing to do physically either, especially the stuff that Tool does.
In this regard, Carey says that he’s doing well:
“And I feel like I can still play pretty much anything I always played. Maybe not with quite the vim and vigor. [Laughs] But I can play anything and I’m suffering that much now. But doing it three nights in a row is another story for Maynard.”
Going more into the matter of setlists, Danny added:
“So he gets to pick kind of one of the older ones, you know, and kind of it has to do with what’s going on socially in the world and everything, what we think the fans want to hear and what seems relevant and what doesn’t, just from the subject matter and whatnot. But yeah, we usually let Maynard do the setlist for the most part.”
