Jodie Sweetin says she connected Alanis lyrics to Dave Coulier
Jodie Sweetin has recalled the moment she realised Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” may have been inspired by Morissette’s past relationship with Ms. Sweetin’s Full House costar Dave Coulier. Speaking on a recent podcast appearance, the actress described seeing Morissette around the Full House set during the early 1990s and later hearing the 1995 hit with a new perspective.
Sweetin said on the People report that she occasionally saw Morissette visit the set while dating Coulier, and that when “You Oughta Know” was released she felt certain lyrics pointed to what she remembered about their relationship.
Sweetin, who was five when Full House began and played Stephanie Tanner throughout the show’s eight-season run, said she “vaguely” remembers Morissette being around during that period and described the singer as “super young” at the time. She also noted the age gap as she recalled it: Morissette was around 18 or 19, while Coulier was in his early 30s.
After hearing “You Oughta Know,” Sweetin said she began connecting themes in the song to what she had observed, recalling thinking, “I know who that’s about.” She also said one lyric stood out to her in retrospect, pointing to lines suggesting the subject’s next partner resembled “an older version” of Morissette, and adding that Coulier’s next girlfriend “looked rather similar.”
Sweetin added that she did not discuss the rumoured inspiration with Coulier at the time, but has spoken with him about it as an adult. Coulier has previously addressed the speculation publicly, saying in a 2022 SiriusXM appearance that listening to the lyrics made him suspect he may have been the person referenced and that he felt he might have hurt Morissette.
Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill went on to become a major pop-cultural landmark, winning five Grammy Awards in 1996, including Album of the Year, ensuring “You Oughta Know” remains one of the most dissected breakup songs of the era.
