In a recent conversation with Eddie Trunk on SiriusXM, renowned drummer Kenny Aronoff opened up about the real reason behind Jason Bonham’s departure from Sammy Hagar’s band, The Circle.

For months, fans speculated about Bonham’s exit, with some assuming he had been fired. Aronoff, who stepped in as Bonham’s replacement, set the record straight.

“I went to see them as a fan because I know everyone in the band,” Aronoff said. “When Jason wasn’t able to make certain gigs, I got the call to fill in.”

Aronoff recalled how quickly he had to step into the role, with almost no preparation. “There were no rehearsals. Maybe one corporate show. I think I practiced once with Sammy in someone’s garage — just 45 minutes. That was it.”

He then shared the circumstances behind Bonham stepping away. “I saw them play at the Forum — it was amazing. But apparently, Jason had just found out his mom was in the hospital. I had no idea at the time. I was just hanging out backstage, having a good time. Two days later, I got a call: ‘We have a situation.’ I was shocked.”

It wasn’t internal issues or drama, but a personal family emergency that caused Bonham to step back from the band.

Bonham had been an integral part of The Circle since 2014, performing alongside Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Vic Johnson. The band was known for its energetic live shows and a setlist that spanned Led Zeppelin classics, Van Halen hits, and deep cuts from Hagar’s solo and Montrose days.

Outlets like WMGK highlighted the band’s musical diversity during Bonham’s tenure, while Drummer World praised his ability to honor his father John Bonham’s legendary style while bringing his own flair to the stage.
