Jonathan Cain Admits He Floated False Steve Perry Reunion Talk
Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain has acknowledged he previously made misleading public comments implying Steve Perry could rejoin the band during its farewell run. The admission comes as Journey continues a large-scale tour schedule that Cain had referenced when discussing a possible onstage return from the former frontman.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Cain said he “planted a little seed” by suggesting guitarist Neal Schon had already asked Perry about appearing, even though Cain knew the idea would likely be shut down quickly.
Cain described the move as a deliberate attempt to “fish a little bit” and spark conversation, adding that Perry “came immediately out and said, ‘No, I’m not.’” He also framed the tactic as a reaction to what he called the current flood of misinformation online, saying he wanted people to question what they see and hear.
Cain’s earlier remarks had pointed to Journey’s itinerary—he had spoken about “100 shows” and said Perry would be welcome to join on any of them. For longtime fans, the latest clarification underlines how sensitive any Perry reunion talk remains, even decades after the singer left the band in 1987.
The disclosure is likely to cool renewed speculation about a guest appearance, especially with Perry continuing to keep his distance from formal reunion efforts. It also highlights how even casual comments from band members can rapidly turn into headline-making rumours when Journey’s legacy-era lineup is involved.
