In a new How The Hell Did That Happen? with Mary Lou Lord and Maryanne Window podcast, Lord discussed her late ex-boyfriend, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Alternative Nation reporter Mike Mazzarone transcribed her comments.

Mary Lou Lord: I did recognize that he might of had a drug problem. Even then he was romancing heroin. We had talked about that a little bit, talked about drugs a little bit because we were feeling each other out and to him, I said, ‘You can talk to me about anything but don’t ever talk to me about heroin because I don’t want to hear it. I’ve seen too many people go down dark roads, go to dark places and die. I just can’t let that into my life at all.’

Maryanne Window: So that was a smart thing to say

Mary Lou Lord: Well it was, but it was also weird because I think he had just been starting to dabble in it and he highly romanticized it and might have already had a problem. I know for a fact that the stomach issue that he had was definitely real. Just because walking around with him, you would have to stop around every block and sit down.

‘Oh my God, my stomach, Oh my God my stomach.’ It’s weird because you see him on TV or on MTV Unplugged, he just looks like an angel, right? He looks beautiful, like this angelic manboy-person. In actuality he was slothy. He walked with a hunchback, he was really, really skinny, had really bad skin, and was just a fucking mess. Like you would never look at him at that time and think that’s the rock star, singer guy. You would think that’s the fucked up roadie guy.

Maryanne Window: How old was he then?

Mary Lou Lord: He was 24, because I was 26

Maryanne Window: Wow. That’s young.

Mary Lou Lord: Yup.
