Former Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg, who recently published the Kurt Cobain book Serving the Servant, told Q1043 New York in a new interview that Kurt Cobain actually liked Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, despite publicly criticizing Vedder and Pearl Jam.

“Yeah, he liked Eddie Vedder personally, there was no question. This was somebody that he personally did like, but he felt competitive with Pearl Jam, and he wanted Nirvana to be number one, no question about it.”

Goldberg was also asked about Kurt Cobain murder conspiracy theories in a Forbes interview.

Russ Espinoza: There’s still a faction of Nirvana fans who will never trust Courtney Love and her motives when it came to Kurt. On the most extreme end, of course, there’s the inane theory that Courtney somehow had Kurt killed. All that madness aside, do you think Courtney’s intentions for pursuing and marrying Kurt were pure?

Danny Goldberg: I think they were in love with each other. I don’t know how to measure somebody’s intentions, but there’s no question that they were in love with each other, and that was what motivated them being together—or without that they wouldn’t have been together. But how to separate the different parts of somebody: somebody’s soul from their mind, from what they look like, from what their job is, from how talented they are… I don’t know that people fall in love in pieces that way. Obviously those were all aspects of who he was. He was really talented and doing very well; but I just was there and they were in love with each other. That’s all I can say about that.
