Mike Shinoda recently talked about Linkin Park’s upcoming album, From Zero, in an interview with BBC’s Radio 1. He discussed the new song “Over Each Other” and shared thoughts about Emily Armstrong being the new lead singer. With that said, a Linkin Park member was told to fire Mike Shinoda.
Shinoda mentioned that at the beginning of making the album, they weren’t sure who would be in the band. The song “Over Each Other” was written early on, but they later worked with Emily and Colin, the new singer and drummer. By the time they recorded the song together, the band was really close, which helped them make it one of their favorite tracks. He noted that while their first two songs, “The Emptiness Machine” and “Heavy Is The Crown,” were heavier, this new song had a lighter sound.
“I think the new record, which is called ‘From Zero,’ at the beginning of the whole process of making the album, we didn’t know what the lineup was gonna be,” Shinoda admitted during the chat. “This song actually got written very early in the process but then very late in the process, we jammed with Emily and Colin, our new singer and drummer. By the time we wrote this song we were very tight and we were really enjoying ourselves and having a great time. We kind of redid the song, approached the song and it became one of our favorite songs in the album. I’m excited you’re able to hear it, I’m excited that people see the video. I’m excited for people to hear the album. The first two songs we put out were ‘The Emptiness Machine’ and ‘Heavy Is The Crown,’ this is a less heavy track.”
When asked about working with Emily, Shinoda said he felt comfortable. Some songs stayed close to his original ideas, but this song became more of a team effort, making it feel just right with Emily singing.
The music video for “Over Each Other” was directed by Joe Hahn, who has made many classic Linkin Park videos. He shared that the video was filmed in Korea, which was a dream for him. He wanted it to have a K-drama feel and praised Emily’s performance.
The album From Zero will be released on November 15.
