Maria Shriver opens up on Donald Trump
The former California First Lady recently shared a lengthy essay in which she looked forward to the nation’s 250th birthday and marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
However, her piece was not without criticism of the president, as she appeared to liken Trump’s leadership to “tyranny.”
Shriver has remained outspoken about her views on Trump, previously calling him out after he claimed late actor Rob Reiner suffered from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
In Shriver’s January 17 article, she reflected on the state of the country while encouraging citizens to remain optimistic despite it all. Shriver was not afraid to shine light on the happenings since Trump’s reemergence as president.
“One year ago, this president was sworn in. What a tumultuous year it has been,” the 70-year-old wrote in her publication, Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper.
She continued, describing how agencies were disrupted, landmark buildings were renamed in Trump’s image, health insurance was lost, and the press faced accusations of “fake news” and lawsuits.
The former “CBS News Morning” anchor also pointed out contradictions in Trump’s stance on protest. While he encouraged demonstrations in Venezuela and Iran, he discouraged them in Minneapolis. She called the conflicting reports from the administration “dizzying” and “scary.”
Reflecting on these developments, Shriver said they made her think about America’s beginnings and the people who risked everything to “live free of tyranny.”
Shriver continued her article, sparking hope towards rebuilding the country, remembering how her late friends Bob and Michele Reiner had big hopes for the country.
“Just before they died, my friends, Rob and Michele Reiner imagined a campaign unlike any other— one in which America herself was the candidate,” Shriver wrote.
“They dreamt of that because they believed America belonged to all of us and that we can all get behind her,” the journalist shared, noting that she loved the idea and now believes in it more.
Shriver then concluded with a call for unity, writing, “America, like each of us, is strongest when she’s unified and whole.”
