Former Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum says he’s open to the idea of reuniting Velvet Revolver with Lzzy Hale as the band’s singer.
His comments came during a new interview with 100 FM The Pike, where Sorum discussed the recently released concert film “Sound & Vision Live.” The film features an all-star house band led by Sorum, with Paul Rodgers and Geezer Butler among its members, backing a rotating lineup of special guests including Corey Taylor, Glenn Hughes, Nuno Bettencourt, Robert DeLeo, Lzzy Hale, and more.
Filmed in Palm Springs this past March, the concert included Hale performing a cover of Bad Company’s “Shooting Star.”
“I think people are gonna be blown away,” Sorum said of Hale’s performance. “Obviously she’s got her band, but this particular song, when you hear the way she sings it, it’s… Even Geezer Butler came up to me and said, ‘That’s the best singer I’ve heard since Tina Turner.’ And I was, like, ‘I think you’re right.’ I mean, she’s got it, man. She’s just amazing.
“I knew I needed… I wanted some female energy up there. I didn’t want it to be a bunch of dudes. So I invited her, and she just killed it. So I’m really excited about people hearing that one, too. That’s on YouTube as well, if you wanna go watch it.”
The conversation then turned to Velvet Revolver, which parted ways with singer Scott Weiland in 2008. Weiland briefly reunited with the band for a one-off performance in 2012, which marked their final show together before his death in 2015.
When host Mike Hsu suggested Velvet Revolver could return with Hale as its singer, Sorum replied: “Whew. Yeah, I mean, come on. I’d do it. I don’t know what those other two guys [Slash and Duff McKagan] are up to, but give ’em a call. [Laughs]”
