Another music man has died recently and several of the world’s heaviest rockers are mourning his passing. Gary Rossington of Lynyrd Skynyrd has passed away. Metallica’s James Hetfield is one of many who miss him.

As per Ultimate Guitar, Rock and metal’s greatest from around the world paid homage to Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, who passed away this past unday (March 5).

Rossington was a part of the legendary Southern rock band since its earlier days in 1964, and was the only member who appeared on all of the band’s releases, both with the classic line-up and after the 1987 reunion.

No official cause of death was given when the tragic news broke, but the guitarist was known to have suffered from heart issues in the last few years, culminating in emergency surgery in 2021. The band’s announcement read:

“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today. Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does.”

Given how influential Gary Rossington and Lynyrd Skynyrd were for several generations of guitar players, many, including James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine, Joe Bonamassa, and more, took to social media with heartfelt condolences and last goodbyes to their friend and idol.

Taking to Metallica’s official social media accounts James Hetfield wrote:

“RIP Brother Gary. Thank you for bringing me so much joy with your guitar playing and songwriting in one of my all time favorite bands, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

“James”
