Despite the understandably difficult nature of stepping in for the late Chester Bennington in an extremely popular band like Linkin Park, Emily Armstrong seems to be very much enjoying herself in this new role. While she has previously admitted that the enormity of the situation caused some initial difficulties and fear that she had to learn to overcome, Armstrong also isn’t shy about sharing how much joy joining Linkin Park has brought her.
Unfortunately for Armstrong, though, joining that band also meant having to keep it a secret until they were ready to announce their big comeback.
In a recent interview on the band’s official “From Zero” podcast, the singer revealed that she was so happy about joining Linkin Park that she actually was afraid her happiness would lead to her slipping up and telling someone she had been chosen as their new singer:
“I mean, I’ve been invited to a lot of things like birthdays and stuff like that, and then I go in my head. I’m like ‘So I’m gonna go and hang out, have a couple drinks, and they’re gonna ask what I’m doing. And then I’m gonna feel weird by saying ‘Yeah, just rehearsing.” And it feels weird to just say ‘Yeah, rehearsing.'”
“Like, ‘So how’s Dead Sara doing? You guys writing something?’ And then I just talk myself out of going anywhere. I don’t want to have these fake conversations where I can’t say everything and I’m so happy, and I don’t want to pretend that I’m not as happy. And so I just talked myself out of it and just stayed here.”
Going to a smaller band like Dead Sara to one as huge as Linkin Park felt like a “pinch me” moment for Armstrong who, elsewhere in the podcast, revealed when it finally began to sink in that she was in fact now a member of Linkin Park.
“Once we left the studio, that’s when I was just like, ‘Oh my fucking God.’ I was allowed to just throw myself into this new world. It was like I stepped into Disney World. It was like, fucking full of magic and full of opportunity, and everything you could possibly imagine,” she said.
