In a new NME interview, Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett discussed playing with The Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger a few years ago on Saturday Night Live. Shiflett said that during rehearsals, Jagger said his voice was sore and wasn’t sure if he would be able to sing, but once he started singing he was incredible despite any issues he may have been going through.

“A few years back, Foo Fighters got to be his backup band. On Saturday Night Live, we got to do a couple tunes with him. We went out to New York, and rehearsed with him all week, it was just mind-blowing, a super childhood dream come true. All week, he would come into rehearsal and be like, ‘My throat is a little sore. I’m not gonna go.’

Then the second the song would start, he would be bouncing off the wall. He just would become, he couldn’t not be Mick Jagger. Then we played the afterparty that night, after SNL. We played with Taylor’s cover band, but we all got up, everyone in the Foos was getting up and playing. We told him we’d do a couple of Stones songs in the cover band, we told him if you want to come play, we tried to get Jeff Beck too, Jeff Beck didn’t do it, but at a certain point we were sitting there playing.

We didn’t think he was going to actually show up and come do it, and we look at the side of the stage and there was Mick Jagger, getting ready and revved up, and he came out. That was even more than playing SNL, that moment was my greatest accomplishment I think ever as a musician (laughs).”
