Nikki Sixx Explains Why Mick Mars Won’t Return to Touring

Nikki Sixx recently answered a fan who asked if Mick Mars could come back to tour with Mötley Crüe on Twitter. Sixx said that Mars retired from touring because his body can’t handle it anymore, and it wouldn’t be fair to make him go through that again.

“Remember, Mick retired because his health couldn’t handle life on the road,” Sixx said. “We all understand that, so why would you want to put him through it again?”

Sixx’s answer makes it clear that Mars didn’t leave because of drama or disagreements. He left because touring became too painful, and the band respects that decision.

Why Mick Mars Retired From Touring

Mick Mars officially stepped away from touring in October 2022 after 41 years with Mötley Crüe. The Bob Rocks reported that his decision came after decades of battling Ankylosing Spondylitis (A.S.), a severe inflammatory disease that affects the spine.

According to Wikipedia, Mars has lived with this painful condition since he was 17. Over time, it prevented him from moving his head, forced him into a hunched posture, and led to hip-replacement surgery in 2004. The disease eventually made long tours physically impossible.

Mars Didn’t Quit the Band

Despite his limitations, Mars made it clear he wasn’t leaving the band entirely. Loudwire reported that he still wants to record music and may be open to performing at stationary residencies that don’t involve intense travel schedules. The other members of Mötley Crüe supported his choice, acknowledging how much strength it took to perform for so many decades under those conditions.

John 5 Takes Over Touring Duties With Mars’ Blessing

After Mars stepped away from touring, guitarist John 5 joined the band for live shows. According to Metal Wani, John 5 confirmed that Mars was completely supportive, saying Mars was “really happy” he took on the role. This allowed the band to keep touring without risking Mars’ health.

Prioritizing Health Over Nostalgia

Sixx’s recent response highlights that despite fans hoping for Mars’ return, the band’s priority is his wellbeing. Any future involvement from Mars would need to fit what he can safely handle. Mötley Crüe’s stance is simple: health comes first, even if that means letting go of nostalgic dreams
