Warrant’s lead singer Robert Mason recently shared details about his secret role as a background singer for Ozzy Osbourne during the 1995-1996 Ozzmosis tour in an interview with the Krash Kourse Metal Show.

Mason explained that he had tried out for the band Cry of Love, but didn’t get the gig. While he was looking for work, Sharon Osbourne reached out, asking if he wanted to be a background singer for Ozzy’s upcoming tour. This was after Ozzy released his Ozzmosis album, though Mason wasn’t on the album. He was credited in the tour program, but his role was kept secret at the time.

Back then, there were no social media or smartphones, so news spread slowly. Ozzy’s team didn’t want anyone to know Mason was helping out, fearing rumors that Ozzy couldn’t sing on his own. Mason explained that he wasn’t there to replace Ozzy’s voice — he was just singing the harmony parts, like what Ozzy had sung on the records. He worked with John Sinclair, who played keyboards on stage, and they kept it all low-key to avoid negative press.

Mason said he loved working with Ozzy and really appreciated the experience. His time with Ozzy was during the 1995-1996 Ozzmosis tours, which supported the album. Sharon Osbourne picked Mason for the job, and producers like Keith Olsen recommended him. Mason’s background vocals helped make the live shows sound as good as the studio versions, especially during Black Sabbath songs.
