Pearl Jam member wants Stone Temple Pilots in Hall of Fame

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament says Stone Temple Pilots belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A fan told Ament he’d like to see Pearl Jam acknowledge STP after false copycat accusations in the 90’s. Ament told the fan he has created a new shirt of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame snubs after the original one he wore in 2017, and that STP are on the list of bands that have become eligible since then.

Ament said, “STP are on the new shirt :-).” Stone Temple Pilots have been eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 2018. Soundgarden were just inducted into the Hall of Fame this past weekend.

At the 2017 Rock Hall ceremony, Ament wore a hand-made shirt listing dozens of acclaimed artists who had not yet been inducted, saying at the time, “We were affected by bands that aren’t here.” The gesture became a viral symbol of his support for overlooked rock acts.

While the two bands were often compared in the early ’90s, members of Stone Temple Pilots have consistently pushed back against the “copycat” label. Bassist Robert DeLeo told Screamer Magazine that critics initially “mistook” STP for Pearl Jam early on due to sonic similarities, but that the band quickly found its own identity. “We never stuck to that tag,” DeLeo later told Loudwire. “You don’t want to be pigeon-holed.”

Despite the early comparisons, mutual respect between the groups has grown over time, with Pearl Jam’s instrumentalists reportedly having friendly relationships with Stone Temple Pilots. Ament’s inclusion of STP on his new shirt acknowledges their lasting impact on rock music and the growing legacy of the late great Scott Weiland.
