Radiohead offshoot band The Smile recently announced that their touring plans for this summer have been canceled.
Jonny Greenwood faced a medical emergency
The official statement by the group revealed that the reason for this decision is guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s medical emergency and hospitalization. The band didn’t share exact details of what caused Jonny’s state but The Smile revealed its seriousness.
“A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care,” the statement shared through the band’s official channels reads. “Mercifully, he is now out of danger and will soon return home.”
Jonny Greenwood has ceased all activity until he gets approval from the doctors. The statement added:
“We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny’s care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery. To that end, The Smile tour of Europe in August is canceled.”
It added: “Refunds for headline shows will be available from your Ticket provider.
“We all wish Jonny a speedy recovery.”
The band, which also features singer Thom Yorke and drummer Tom Skinner, announced a slew of European dates in support of their 2024 album “Wall of Eyes.” Last month, the band played shows in Germany, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria and Italy. Starting August 13, the Smile was set to perform in Sigulda, Latvia; Warsaw, Poland; Frankfurt, Germany; Munich, Germany; Vienna, Austria; Bordeaux, France; and Valencia, Spain.
The band has released two UK top 10 albums in A Light For Attracting Attention and Wall Of Eyes. The band was set to play venues in Switzerland, Sweden, Germany and Poland next month. Greenwood was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Radiohead in 2019. He received Oscar nominations for his scores for Phantom Thread (2017) and The Power of the Dog (2021).
