A photo of late Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley and his father Phil has been online for years, but fans did not know exactly when it was taken. Now a reader named Daniel has sent a higher quality dated version of the photo, and it is now confirmed to have been taken in December 1997.

The only other photos of Staley to surface following his final show with Alice In Chains in July 1996 were photos from when Alice In Chains attended the Grammys in February 1997, Alice In Chains’ “Get Born Again” and “Died” recording sessions from August 1998, and Staley backstage at a Jerry Cantrell show in Seattle in October 1998.

The October 1998 photo is the last one available online of Staley, as there are no pictures available to fans taken from 1999 to 2002, though Staley’s mother has revealed in the past that the final photo taken of Staley was in February 2002 with his newborn nephew Oscar. That photo has yet to surface in the last 15 years.
