Alex Van Halen recently revealed that he’s teaming up with Toto’s Steve Lukather to complete a collection of unfinished Van Halen songs that his late brother and bandmate, Eddie Van Halen, had been working on prior to his death.
The project features Alex on drums, Eddie on guitar, and Wolfgang Van Halen on bass. The only element still missing is a lead vocalist.
In an interview with KazaGastão on YouTube, Alex confirmed that the search for the right singer is ongoing. Although he had hoped to enlist Bad Company’s Paul Rodgers for the role, those plans ultimately fell through.
Discussing the type of person he wants to front the project, the drummer shared:
“Music is not so much about music as it is about people having a shared experience. I’m 72. We gotta find somebody in that age group who was exposed to the same musical experience that we have. Otherwise, it doesn’t have the depth.”
When the interviewer suggested Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant for the role, Alex didn’t completely rule out the idea.
“Robert Plant is brilliant. But if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be,” he said. “And he’s out touring, doing his thing. He would’ve been an ideal choice. But nothing is etched in stone. And I really believe that the universe will work something out to where this project will come out the best it can possibly be. We have no other intent other than to have it come to fruition.”
