After many years of rivalry, it seems that tensions are easing between former Van Halen singers David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. Recently, Roth made jokes about Hagar, which Hagar interpreted as harmless banter that included compliments. Hagar then took it a step further by expressing his desire to be friends with Diamond Dave.

It’s no secret that Hagar performs songs from the Roth era of Van Halen. Speaking to Ultimate Classic Rock, Hagar described what he appreciates about the songs from Roth’s era, beginning with his love of “Runnin’ With the Devil.” He said:

“Well, it’s like ‘Rock Candy’ to me, it just has it. You know, anybody can play it. It’s one of those cover songs. If I’m going to do a cover song, I like to do [things like] a Led Zeppelin song, or a Rolling Stones song that’s iconic, ‘Honky Tonk Women,’ or Led Zeppelin’s ‘Rock and Roll,’ or ‘Whole Lotta Love.’ You kick those songs off anywhere, anytime, anyplace, any amount of people, any place in the world, and everybody is happy.”

Sammy Hagar also recently celebrated the release of his new live album by dedicating it to fellow Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth on his birthday.

In an Instagram video, Hagar explained the connection between his album release and Roth’s special day.

“Our record, ‘Residency,’ the live album, that we recorded in Vegas, coming out on October 10th,” Hagar said. “October 10th is also David Lee Roth’s birthday. Guess what? It’s a birthday present to Dave from us.”

Hagar then led a birthday celebration for his fellow Libra.

“We’re gonna sing happy birthday to David Lee Roth,” he continued. “He’s a f*cking Libra, he can’t be all bad.”
