Billy Corgan was interviewed on Mancow on Tuesday and discussed what drugs he used during the early days of The Smashing Pumpkins.

Corgan said he did not use marijuana, and wouldn’t answer if he’d tried heroin, though he has never been reported to have used it. He did admit to using mushrooms in the past.

“The Pumpkins used to play gigs on hallucinogens, that was interesting. Anybody who remembers our sort of Gish and Siamese Dream period, trying to play that type of music on mushrooms or LSD was very interesting.”

Corgan said despite performing while on hallucinogenic drugs in the past, he has not written music on drugs, as it would be very difficult.

He also discussed working with Rick Rubin on his upcoming solo album.

“I worked with Rick once in 1998, and I’ve been friends with him ever since. It was really cool, if anybody is a fan of the work he did with Jonny Cash, he got me to kind of strip away a lot of the stuff I would normally do, and really get down to the simplest part of the songs and music, and I think he’s really done me a service in that. Everyone who has heard the record is sort of surprised, because it feels kind of like a return to form, but it doesn’t feel like I’m going backwards.”
