In a recent interview with The Guardian, Stewart Copeland was asked to recall his most “cringe-worthy” encounter with a celebrity. Somewhat unexpectedly, the Police drummer pointed to an incident involving Paul McCartney, which took place following a Foo Fighters concert.
“I once Bogarted a Beatle,” he said. “It was at the after party for the Foo Fighters concert at Wembley Stadium.”
“Somebody says, ‘Oh, I smell marijuana,’ and so I wander over in that general direction just as somebody’s handing a joint,” Copeland continued. “So I said, ‘OK, sure’ – just to be polite – I took the joint, and I looked over and I realised that the intended recipient of the joint was none other than Paul McCartney. And I had just interrupted the passage of this chalice to the great one! I had interloped in this moment.”
“I went to bed that night not quite sure whether I was mortally embarrassed or if that was kind of a cool brag,” he added.
While David Bowie is often widely praised by fellow artists, The Police‘s Stewart Copeland recently admitted he’s never been much of a fan. In a new interview with The Guardian, the The Police drummer was asked to name what he considers to be the most overrated album of all time. Instead of picking just one, he called out Bowie’s entire catalog.
“Anything by David Bowie,” he responded.
While Copeland acknowledged Bowie’s contributions to music and his broader cultural impact, the drummer went on to explain that his music never personally resonated with him.
