Lionel Duke, drummer for British soul band The Christians, suffered a cardiac arrest while performing as a supporting act for Sting at a recent concert in Liverpool. The band shared the news in an emotional statement posted to Facebook, thanking fans for their concern and praising the quick actions of medics on site.

According to the band, the incident happened during the song “Greenbank Drive,” just four songs into their set at the On The Waterfront concert. As Duke collapsed, frontman Garry Christian immediately stopped the performance and called for medical help. On-site emergency personnel from the event team responded quickly, a move that may have saved Duke’s life.

“We are awaiting news from the Heart and Chest hospital at Broad Green,” the band wrote, thanking the “phenomenal team of medics” who acted swiftly. They also asked fans to keep Duke in their thoughts and “send positive vibes his way.”

Lionel Duke has been part of The Christians’ lineup since at least 2009, playing a vital role in the band’s sound and continued touring efforts. The group, originally formed in Liverpool in 1985, gained popularity with their debut album and have remained active in the UK music scene ever since.

Following the incident, Sting was given the band’s blessing to continue with his headline performance. He later addressed the audience from the stage, assuring fans that Duke had been taken to the hospital and was receiving care. Sting offered his thoughts and prayers, dedicating his final song “Fragile” to the drummer.
