Serj Tankian has revealed that he wants System of a Down to do a live peformance release with an orchestra like Metallica have done with their S&M projects.

Tankian told Rolling Stone, “Kind of, yeah. Every time we do a tour, and we get together for a rehearsal, and we play a song that we’ve played a thousand or 5,000 times between rehearsals and live shows, it’s always interesting because there’s always a surprise to it. I think our songs are so surprising that when you are away from them…

When you play them every day, you’ve got butter and toast every day, but when you’re away from them – I’ll sit in a car and someone would be playing our music, or I hear somewhere being played, and without people knowing that I’m listening to it…And I’d be like, ‘That’s really interesting.’ I think It’s got surprises that will always be there, and they always make me smile – our music.

There’s always something funny about it in the end, and of course, I also have the added pleasure of having the experiences around that music – how it’s formed, what stories, what jokes, what drama, whatever was around that particular piece of music or the song. And that’s cool. Speaking of classical and System, one day – and I’ve told Daron [Malakian, guitar] that one day we should really do that.

We should basically arrange a classical version of some System songs, at least play them with a nice, proper orchestra like Metallica did. I think it would be uniquely different for System. Doing something crazy like ‘Chop Suey!’ with an orchestra would be incredible! But fast, like, really fast tempo. I’m talking about a badass orchestra, whatever we need to do. That would be insane.” Ultimate-Guitar transcribed Tankian’s remarks.
