Ted Nugent Replies to Billy Corgan’s Rock Claims
Ted Nugent has weighed in after Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan said rock music has been “purposely dialed down” in mainstream culture despite the genre’s continued strength as a live draw. Nugent offered a short response on social media, adding another veteran voice to the ongoing debate about rock’s place in modern media.
Reacting to Corgan’s remarks, Nugent wrote, “The spirit of rock ‘n’ roll is defiance,” Rock Celebrities reported, noting that the statement was shared on X.
Corgan argued that he witnessed a major shift at MTV in the late 1990s, claiming the network “suddenly” decided rock “was out” while it was still popular, and that rap became the dominant replacement. He also said standards and practices changed during that era and claimed he saw the “gravity shift,” while acknowledging that “great music” still emerged from the transition.
The Smashing Pumpkins singer also framed today’s landscape as a disconnect between business and visibility, saying rock is “probably the most dominant ticket-selling thing in the Western world” but has “almost no representation” in wider culture. Nugent’s remark follows his own recent run of headlines, including a political statement in which he attacked wealthy ‘thugs’ in a separate rant.
As streaming and pop-driven platforms continue to shape what breaks through to mass audiences, the argument over whether rock has been sidelined on purpose or simply displaced by changing tastes remains unsettled. What is clear is that major touring numbers still give the genre leverage, even when its cultural footprint feels smaller than its live business suggests.
