Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello tweeted about snubs on a new Top 10 African American Guitarists list.

“Cool share from Ernie C of ⁦@BodyCountBand⁩ on African American guitarists, though quite a few left out, including Slash, Ben Harper, Lenny Kravitz.”

Tom Morello, one of the most innovative guitarists of his generation, is widely celebrated for his groundbreaking work with Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, and as a solo artist. Known for his inventive use of effects pedals and unconventional playing techniques, Morello’s sound blends rock, hip-hop, and electronic elements into something uniquely his own. While his style is distinct, Morello has often cited a diverse group of guitarists as key influences on his musical evolution.

Jimi Hendrix is one of Morello’s most significant inspirations. Hendrix’s trailblazing approach to the guitar, including his use of feedback, wah pedals, and studio experimentation, profoundly impacted Morello. Hendrix’s ability to use the guitar as an instrument of both melody and noise resonated deeply with Morello’s own experimental tendencies.

Morello has also spoken about his admiration for Jimmy Page, the guitarist for Led Zeppelin. Page’s skill in crafting unforgettable riffs and combining technical proficiency with raw emotion inspired Morello to approach his own playing with similar intensity and creativity.

Tony Iommi, the riff master of Black Sabbath, is another key influence. Iommi’s heavy, doom-laden guitar work helped define the sound of heavy metal and served as a blueprint for Morello’s aggressive yet rhythmic approach to the instrument.

Additionally, Morello has drawn inspiration from punk guitarists like Joe Strummer of The Clash, whose politically charged music and stripped-down playing style influenced both Morello’s sound and his approach to songwriting.

The influence of Eddie Van Halen is also evident in Morello’s work. Van Halen’s technical innovations, including tapping and his flair for showmanship, left a lasting impression on Morello as a guitarist who continuously pushes boundaries.

These diverse inspirations highlight Morello’s eclectic musical foundation, enabling him to create a style that is both revolutionary and deeply rooted in guitar history.
