Will FOO FIGHTERS, NO DOUBT, and METALLICA play at the Los Angeles Olympics Opening Ceremony in 2028?
With the success of Gojira’s performance at the Olympics Opening Ceremony in Paris last month, and with Red Hot Chili Peppers being included in the LA28 handover portion of the Closing Ceremony, it seems more than likely that the 2028 LA Opening and Closing Ceremonies could continue with this trend and include at least a few rock bands, pulling from California’s (and America’s) massive talent pool. In no particular order, here’s ten bands we think could possibly perform at the Summer Olympics in four years.
FOO FIGHTERS: Being one of the biggest, still active, rock bands in the world, this seems like the most obvious choice. Dave Grohl and co. are also no stranger to performing at the Olympics, as the Foos played at the Olympics Metals Plaza during the Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002.
METALLICA: Capitalizing off of the momentum that Gojira built at the Paris Olympics, if in LA they decide to include a metal band it would make sense that they’d choose arguably the most recognizable metal band worldwide.
NO DOUBT: Their ska, alt-rock, sound is quintessentially Californian and, with the success of their recent reunion at Coachella, it’d be surprising not to see Gwen Stefani and co. perform at the Opening Ceremony.
THE BEACH BOYS: Speaking of quintessentially Californian, it’d seem almost wrong if the surviving members didn’t somehow participate.
EAGLES: Another band that is synonymous with California, specifically the 1970s LA rock scene, a performance of “Hotel California” is essential.
GUNS N’ ROSES: If they’re going to celebrate the LA music scene, then they can’t forget to highlight at least one band from the 80s and the Sunset Strip.
VAN HALEN: While Eddie Van Halen may be gone, and the surviving members seem to have no interest in reuniting, maybe the same event that brings the world together could possibly bring Van Halen back together for a one off performance.
BLINK-182: Are they technically from San Diego? Yes. But half the Olympic events in 2028 aren’t taking place in LA anyway. Plus, it seems Travis Barker is contractually obligated to show up at pretty much every major music event. 😂
RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS: While they did already play in the LA portion of the Paris Closing Ceremony, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them play again in four years at the Opening Ceremony.
AEROSMITH: Although they just announced their retirement due to Steven Tyler’s persistent vocal injury, four years is a long time. A reunion with Tyler singing once again could be LA’s version of Celine Dion overcoming her health issues to give an epic performance at the Paris Olympics.
