Wolfgang Van Halen recently performed Ozzy Osbourne’s classic song Crazy Train at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The event honored Ozzy as a solo artist and featured a star lineup, including Tool’s Maynard James Keenan, producer Andrew Watt, Metallica’s Robert Trujillo, and Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ Chad Smith. A Metallica member also visited Ozzy Osbourne recently for good measure.

Wolfgang explained to Blabbtermouth that Ozzy himself invited him to be part of the show. He said you don’t say no to Ozzy and joked, “You just say, ‘Yes, sir, I’ll do my best.’”

“I got the request from Ozzy. So you don’t say, ‘Yeah, no.’ You’re, like, ‘I’ll do what I can, sir.’ [Laughs] That’s all I could do.”

The group had two rehearsals in Los Angeles before heading to Cleveland for a final practice the day before the event. Wolfgang said the rehearsals helped the band work well together and get comfortable.

Although it was his first time working with Andrew Watt, Wolfgang called him a great guy and the “leader” of the performance. Even though he was playing alongside famous musicians, Wolfgang felt supported, especially by Zakk Wylde, who gave him advice and encouragement.

Playing Randy Rhoads’ legendary guitar solo was a huge honor for Wolfgang. He said he doesn’t like ranking guitarists but called Rhoads an incredible talent who left a big mark in a short time.

Despite being nervous, Wolfgang said the experience was made easier by the supportive team and called it a highlight to work with Maynard James Keenan, one of his favorite singers. He stayed professional during rehearsals, but by the end, it felt more relaxed, and everyone enjoyed the experience.
