Talk about a super-pairing that ultimately did not come to pass. While members of Nirvana and Soundgarden are putting together their own supergroups lately, it was recently reported during an interview with the Palm Spring Post that Metallica great, Jason Newsted almost joined a new Van Halen tribute tour which would have also had Alex Van Halen and guitar legend Joe Satriani.
While Newsted would have a jam session out in California, he ultimately would decline the project stating it would be impossible to do justice to the legacy of Van Halen. Credit to the outlet for the following quote.
“How could you?” he said. “There’s nobody that can top it, so how do you show it honor? I didn’t want it to be viewed as a money grab. And then it kind of just all fizzled.”
In other news concerning Van Halen, during this year’s Grammy Awards, fans of the late and legendary guitarist, Eddie Van Halen were disappointed in the amount of time given to Van Halen’s tribute at the award show. However, if it were up to one of the producers of the annual event, things might have gone a bit differently.
During a recent interview on The Mitch Lafon Jeremy White Show, producer David Wild stated that he wanted a more grandiose celebration of Eddie Van Halen’s legacy over what was ultimately offered. Credit to Ultimate Classic Rock for the following quote.
“Eddie Van Halen was a friend of mine. I wrote a cover story on him, I worked with him on a book that he wanted to do at one point, I saw him a year before he died, and I was at his house. I loved him. … We went and said to the family … ‘We have these people who could perform something. If Wolfgang wants to do something, he can do that. Tell us what you would be comfortable with.’ … They said, ‘No one should perform it.’ [It] was not like they wanted to say, ‘Only if you can get so-and-so’’ … they didn’t want anyone, so we had to find the video.”
