John Johnston recently contacted Alternative Nation about his viral video featuring miniature dolls recreating Nirvana’s landmark 1991 music video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Johnston told Alternative Nation, “I’m an artist from Denver and have been a huge fan of Nirvana. Since it has been 25 years we made a remake of Nirvana’s Smells like teen spirit video in a miniature doll version. We tried to replicate the original as close as we could in miniature. We made the set, guitars, pieced together dolls and tried to capture the same spirit of the original. We were recently asked to be in a film festival.”

He also described the making of the video, “3 weeks to make the guitars, set, dolls, storyboard. 6 Days of shooting. 1 Day of editing. Some shots required 9 people to make doll movements, camera, lighting, smoke, etc. We used about 60 dolls for the shoot, and we put Dave Grohl’s head on a spring so he could rock harder. The budget to make the video was $1000.”
