Wolfgang Van Halen recently addressed speculation regarding his song “I Really Wanna,” which many believe contains a response to David Lee Roth’s previous criticism.

In 2024, David Lee Roth started a feud without provocation by posting a lengthy rant that was essentially a monologue insulting Wolfgang. The clip started with Roth suggesting that the late Eddie Van Halen’s son benefited from nepotism, and then went on to accuse Wolfgang of trying to throw Roth’s guests out of Van Halen shows. During the rant, Roth referred to Wolfgang as “this f*ckin’ kid.”

During a recent interview with Thinking About Guitar, the discussion revolved around specific lyrics in Van Halen’s song that fans interpret as a direct response to Roth’s earlier comments. When asked about the line “that f*cking kid’s on the other side” and its connection to Roth’s previous reference to him as “that f*cking kid,” Van Halen provided an insight.

“I think, you know, like I mentioned with Mammoth, it’s my comfortability with it now, I feel like,” Van Halen said. “You know, this shedding of the old and reaching this new era, so to speak, I think that really plays into it, that I’ve finally, I think I’ve figured out who I am outside of my past.”

“I’m ready to move forward in this new direction and being this newer and better and healthier version of myself,” he added.
