Dave Grohl has gray hair in a new photo.

This past May, Josh Freese announced via a statement shared to Instagram that he had been let go from Foo Fighters, saying that the band had decided “to go in a different direction with their drummer.”

Dave Grohl and co. have yet to reveal who will officially replace Freese (who joined the band in 2023 following the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022) despite the band announcing a handful of shows throughout Asia set to take place later this year.

Since Freese’s exit, fans have been speculating about who may take over the role.

One of the leading theories? That Dave Grohl may choose not to hire a permanent replacement at all, and instead handle the studio drumming himself while getting temporary drummers to fill in on tours.

“I 100% believe it’s just going to be touring drummers from now on and Dave will play on any future albums they might make,” one fan wrote on Reddit.

Another user shared a similar sentiment, while also speculating that The Darkness drummer Rufus Taylor, or Taylor Hawkins’ son Shane, could be chosen to fill in: “Honestly, my guess is from this point is, if not [The Darkness drummer] Rufus Taylor, then Dave will probably handle the studio work for the time being and [Taylor Hawkins’ son] Shane Hawkins does the touring (Not that I agree but it is what it is).”

A third fan added: “At best, the band has a long-term touring replacement. Dave will probably do drums on the records.”

As of now, Foo Fighters have yet to comment on the situation, but appear to be ramping up to some kind of announcement for their 30th anniversary on July 4th.
