Pearl Jam Reveal Why New Album Is ‘In Limbo’

Pearl Jam released a new single “Can’t Deny Me” a couple of months ago, and said the song would appear on a forthcoming studio album. The announcement didn’t mention a release date, but it’s likely fans will have to wait until next year for the new Pearl Jam album.

Asked by Jeff Sweatman of 106.1 The Corner for an update on the next Pearl Jam record, Jeff Ament said: “I wish I had an answer for you. We have a bunch of stuff that’s sort of partly written. Unfortunately, we have rehearsals coming up for Europe and the shows this summer, so it’s in a little bit of a limbo state right now. We still need to record it; we haven’t really recorded anything. But [there are] a lot of ideas.”

“We’ve sort of been telling ourselves that we weren’t gonna put a ton of pressure on the situation,” he continued. “We really wanna make something great, and we wanna have the freedom to live with some of these ideas for a while and then maybe record them in a different way. We’re sort of exploring all sorts of different things right now. So I think it bodes well for whatever the next album is.”

Ament said last week that Pearl Jam’s touring activities over the next few months are getting in the way of any new album plans. “We just need a good six to eight weeks carved out where we’re just in recording all these ideas we have,” he told the “Kyle Meredith With…” podcast.

    What gets released first?

Pearl Jam’s next album or George R.R. Martin’s next book?

  • Corndog

“we wanna have the freedom to live with some of these ideas for a while and then maybe record them in a different way”.

Don’t do that. When that happens, we get Light Years instead of Puzzles and Games….

    • Olga Stewart

At this point, it might be light years by the time the album gets released.

    • Michael Dolce

That’s….a really really really good point. Being an artist myself, the best art i produce is when im inspired and don’t over think it. The first 3 PJ records were all recorded fast and look how they turned out. Even Yield was something turned out relatively quick from inception to recording

      • Corndog

Absolutely. I know exactly what you mean. I like to draw, comic book inspired figure art mostly, and the best drawings that i do are the ones when i’m not really concentrating on what i’m doing and just let me hand do the work. As soon as i start to over think it the drawing gets worse and worse and never turns out particularly well. I imagine that music could be similar. As you say, it’s no surprise that the holy trinity turned out the way they did. With the exception of Binaural, i like all their other albums to varying degrees, but none of them ever come close to that first 3.

    just…..stop…..

    • Dave Wight

      Disturbed

      • Corndog

Admitting you have a problem is the first step. Good for you.

        • Tomorrow Never Knows

Ehm… “Just stop” is a Disturbed song, dude.

          • Corndog

            Yes, I am aware….

          • Dave Wight

Disturbed is infinitely superior to Pearl Jam, please devote more time n Disturbed and less apologizing for Pearl Jam

          • Corndog

I know everything that i need to know about Disturbed. See, what happened is that i listened to their music……and then decided if i liked it or not. That was all i needed to know. Simple as that. I, did not need an obnoxious, prepubescent music snob such as yourself to tell me what to think about them.

Again with the apologising? The only thing that i apologise for is that Pearl Jam and their fans have to share this beautiful planet with little fascist dipshits like you who spend their lives trolling people on the internet and telling them what they are and are not allowed to like as if someone died and made you some sort of authority on all that is good. Like i said in that other post on the hall of fame article, it’s going to stop. On this site anyway. Your month long spamming fest is over. Relax and join in, or get your coat. Your choice.

          • Olga Stewart

He (Corndog) was referring to Dave.

        • Olga Stewart

Where is the popcorn when you need it? Ha ha!

        • Dave Wight

I have a problem with music fans not making smart decisions.

          • Corndog

You are the problem. People should listen to what they like, what they enjoy. Not what you tell them to like and enjoy. Again, for the millionth time, your opinion is NOT fact.

  • Stone Gossardish

I continue to doubt whether a record will come out before 2019, and I’m starting to bet on 2020.

These people didn’t want to work together for a good long while. They had other plans made for 2018 that were totally shut down by the tragic loss of a year ago. Not that much has apparently changed since then.

I’d rather them not do anything than do something that doesn’t live up to Pearl Jam standards.

PS. I always liked “End of the Day” as a better title than Puzzles & Games. But in either case, it’s a better record and song than the too slow Light Years.

    • Dave Wight

Hopefully it never sees the light of day, it will be unlistenable drivel.

      • Stone Gossardish

Very clearly. But could you tell all the fans that so it will be easier to get tickets to shows again. Like, tell a couple million of them. That would be a big help.

        • Dave Wight

right there are totally uneducated music fans who waste money on seeing this atrocious band and that fraud vedder

  • Dave Wight

Hopefully this new music never comes out, until the band hires an A league musician to write for them, it is going to be awful, they have proven that for 3 decades.

    • Michael Dolce

I appreciate the negging method to getting attention. I hope you eventually monetize your anti-establishment opinions with a YouTube channel devoted to hating on PJ and Nirvana

      • Corndog

No one puts this much effort into something that they profess to despise. It’s counter productive, and it makes no sense at all. I think he just likes to piss in other peoples cornflakes because he gets a kick out of being unpleasant.

        • Olga Stewart

And of course the more you are negative about something, the more that other people will want to find out why.

So yes Dave, that means listening to both PJ and Nirvana.

          • Corndog

Yes you’re right. He’s clearly wasting his time. I think that they’ll be just fine without him though, if all the millions of records sold and all the hundreds of sold out show are anything to go by. Of course, all those people are wrong, and this guy is right. Obviously…

          • Olga Stewart

            Then it’s the apocalypse?

          • Corndog

Are we painting Dave as the Anti-C in this? 🙂

          • Olga Stewart

            Oh god no! Ha ha!

        • Michael Dolce

          Haha you’d be surprised…

          • Corndog

I just don’t get it. Since he turned up here about 2 or 3 weeks ago literally every single comment has been about how PJ and Nirvana are bad because he says so, and how his opinion on music is actually fact, whereas everyone else’s is just opinion and vastly inferior to his own. Oh and he has a strange obsessions with goats. Ash him any questions that he can’t answer with hyperbole RE why his opinion is ‘fact’ and he just ignores the questions.

We’ve had a lot of folks like that on the board recently. Must be silly season.

          • Olga Stewart

            Goats?

            I don’t think I want to know.

          • Corndog

            Yep. He’s obsessed with them.

          • Olga Stewart

My astrological sign is a goat.

            I suppose I shouldn’t have said that?

          • Corndog

Just wave your hand and say ‘these are not the goats you are looking for’ Jedi mind trick style. You’ll be grand:)

          • Olga Stewart

            Ha ha!

          • Olga Stewart

Or ‘This isn’t the Dave you are looking for.’

            Then he vanishes.

          • Corndog

Yeah, he vanishes to go listen to his Pj and Nirvana records! I bet he owns every album that Pearl Jam and Nirvana ever put out!

          • Olga Stewart

            Heh!

      • Olga Stewart

Oh but don’t encourage him. :).

        • Michael Dolce

I wonder if Dave is a Russian bot… hmmm

          • Olga Stewart

            That would not surprise me.

          • Corndog

So the Russians are trying to take down American by starting with its most important export huh? That’s diabolical!! 🙂

      • Dave Wight

I do not wish to monetize this, I just want to help people realize what a joke those bands are, total frauds. Helping others is all worth it.
