Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament was asked was asked if he had a lot of money in the bank in the band’s early days in a new Powell Movement interview.

“No. I made a little money before Ten came out, I worked on the [1992 Cameron Crowe film] Singles art department for six months. I think I was up there for six months, and I think I made 15 grand.”

“I was in the middle of the art department. There was Steve Lineweaver who was the art director, who was also the art director for The Simpsons. His assistant was this guy Clay Griffith, who is a big time art director in huge movies now. He’s probably got 50 movies under his belt or something. I was working with those guys, and Cameron knew I had an eye for keeping the way that the sets looked and all of that.”

There were all of these things that sort of snowballed out of that thing, but mostly it was just being in a creative atmosphere and making money, which was a first for me. Like I had never had been in anything creative in my life where I was actually getting a paycheck for it. There was a part of me, that if Pearl Jam hadn’t been happening at that point, there was a part of me that was like wow this would be a cool life. Move to LA, work in the movie industry, awesome.”
