Foo Fighters Member Replaced By 90’s Legend, Is It Permanent?

A story that went unreported is that at a recent Foo Fighters show in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago, bassist Nate Mendel was absent due to his wife giving birth to twins. Jane’s Addiction and ex-Alanis Morissette bassist Chris Chaney played bass in place of Mendel. This is very notable, as besides Dave Grohl, Mendel has been the only constant member of Foo Fighters since the band’s formation in 1994, so this was the first show in the band’s near 24-year history that Mendel was absent.

Taylor Hawkins and Chris Chaney are bandmates in Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, and they played together in Alanis Morissette’s band in the 90’s. Hawkins left to join Foo Fighters in 1997 after William Goldsmith’s exit, while Chaney left to join Jane’s Addiction in 2002 after Martyn LeNoble left the band.
