Roberto Lorusso has shared a never before heard 1991 interview with Kurt Cobain on CTV. Alternative Nation transcribed Cobain’s comments about Nirvana’s advance deal with Geffen Records.

Lorusso mentioned that he heard Nirvana were paid $750,000 for their initial deal with Geffen for Nevermind. Cobain said the deal was for far less, and Nirvana didn’t keep much of it.

“No we didn’t get that much,” Cobain said.

“[We got] $175,000. 33% tax bracket, 15% to our lawyer, 10% to our manager, $70,000 to Sub Pop, it left us with about $20,000 to buy equipment. I don’t have a place to live at this moment.”

“We have what was left over from the advance. We have a bank account and an accountant, he gives us a little bit of money every month. We’ve been on tour and recording for so long I haven’t had a chance, I got evicted from my apartment about 3 months ago. Every time we come back, we only have a few days at home, so I usually just go to my mother’s, and I haven’t found a place to live yet.”

“We’re not struggling, financially we’re well off. It’s more money than I’ve ever had in my life. To be able to pay rent every month is great, I can’t ask for any more.”

He later said, “Signing away 7 years of your life is a major decision.”
