Sum 41 just wrapped up their farewell tour last month following the band’s announcement they would be calling it quits after nearly 30 years together. Now, in a recent interview with radio station 102.1 The Edge, guitarist Dave Baksh admits that while some are sad to see them go, the majority of fans understand their decision.
When asked if anyone had made them any offers to stick around for a while, Baksh replied:
“It’s crazy. It’s like probably 70-30 in favour of us calling it quits. So, a lot of people are like, ‘Here’s money to stop.’”
Sum 41’s bassist Jason ‘Cone’ McCaslin, who also took part in the interview, chimed in to add that despite disbanding they are still receiving offers to do shows.
“It is weird. I heard Deryck [Whibley, Sum 41 frontman] say this a couple weeks ago. He said that we have had offers to do festivals this summer. Well, like the band’s ending,” McCaslin explained. “I’m like, I didn’t know that. Maybe we should reconsider.”
While McCaslin may be having doubts about the breakup, the band’s 2023 announcement seems to insist that they’re officially done.
“Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans, both old and new, who have supported us,” Sum 41 said in 2023 about the disbandment. “It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you, and we wanted you to hear this from us first.”
“Sum 41 will be disbanding… [We] are excited about what the future will bring for each of us. Thank you for the last 27 years of Sum 41,” the statement concluded.
