Josh Freese Opens Up on Foo Fighters Exit

Drummer Josh Freese has reflected on his recent departure from Foo Fighters, saying he has no bitterness about the way it ended even if the situation stung. Freese, who joined the band in 2023, addressed the split in a new interview while stressing that he is moving forward with other projects.

Looking back on his time in the group, Freese said in a Rick Beato YouTube interview Foo Fighters “were good to me — until they weren’t,” while also noting that he still feels grateful for the experience and does not want anyone to feel sorry for him.

Freese did not go into extensive detail on the internal reasons for the change, but he indicated that the end came unexpectedly and that he tried to handle it professionally. He said he has been in enough bands over the years to understand that line-up shifts can happen quickly, even when things appear stable from the outside.

The drummer’s comments follow a wave of online discussion from fans after the band’s decision became public, and Freese has previously responded to the reaction by emphasising that he is doing fine and has plenty of work. His time with Foo Fighters added another high-profile chapter to a résumé that includes lengthy stints with other major acts.

For Foo Fighters, Freese’s remarks underscore how closely the band’s post-2022 era continues to be scrutinised by fans. While Freese appears focused on what comes next, his blunt summary of the situation suggests the split may remain a talking point until the group clarifies its future plans behind the kit.
