During their concert in Chicago on Friday (Aug. 29th), My Chemical Romance brought out Billy Corgan as a surprise guest to join them in performing the Smashing Pumpkins classic “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.”
Before introducing Corgan, frontman Gerard Way spoke about his love for Smashing Pumpkins and how seeing them during their “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” tour in the mid ‘90s inspired him to pursue music. “We saw that and was like, ‘We would love to do this, it would be real f*cking amazing.”
Speaking specifically about “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” Way said:
“It’s the pandemic right, and I’m super sad about it. And I come across this video, it’s late night and I’m sitting alone… I’m scrolling through Instagram and I see this f*cking kid in his room playing along to ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings’… I’m watching this thing and I felt the blade of Christ enter my chest, it was wild. I never felt anything like that in my life.
“This song is the ultimate rock defiance to me, it’s like searing an imprint on the universe in pure f*cking defiance. It is the best rock n’ roll song ever f*cking made.”
Following the show, Corgan reflected on the performance, writing on Instagram: “Great fun! And fantastic gig by the boys. Just killed it in front of a massive Chicago crowd.”
