In a 2014 Howard Stern interview, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan criticized Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl for putting out stale music, though he gave credit to them for ‘winning’ over him when it came to commercial success.

Corgan said he’s “not particularly” thrilled with Dave Grohl’s output with Foo Fighters. “My criticism of the Foo Fighters if I’m being a music critic is they just haven’t evolved, and that’s been the recent rap on them is just making the same music.” Again, he acknowledged that Grohl is “getting it done” and that from a career perspective, “he’s winning.”

In a new Instagram story Q&A, Corgan seemed to have nothing but positive feelings for Grohl.

A fan asked, “Have you ever met Dave Grohl?” Corgan responded, “First met Dave around 1991 or 92. Very proud of all he’s accomplished.”

Corgan reunited with Courtney Love at a Smashing Pumpkins show on Thursday. He discussed the performance on Instagram.

“Notes on the last few days: In Pittsburgh now, having traversed the night. I’m so tired I literally cannot see straight. Medically speaking, I’m the opposite of cross-eyed (whatever that is called?) so my vision if I’m weary is poor. Kudos again to all our guests (Chino, Courtney, Mark M, Mark S, Dave K, Hooky, and Davey) for paying us the honor; many having come thousands of miles to share the stage with us and the robust, passionate fans of NJ (who did us proud and loud). I meant what I said last night: Jersey was one of the first places in the US to support SP and we are forever grateful. The show last night was historic, fun, and rep’d old school-SP by just winging in the best way, the PNC set on fire by Chino who came out and sang ‘Bodies’. I get chills just thinking about it. People are already asking me if we are going to collaborate, and I’m certainly down. We love the Deftones, so that is nothing but respect to say if there was any interest in a mash up. What do they do in dub land? @Deftones vs @SmashingPumpkins?

Hooky brought gravitas and history, Mark and Dave brought grace and power, Davey was incandescent, and Mark lit up the night with ‘Fly’ and yes, Judas Priest. And Courtney, we’ll, we played a few songs we wrote together (Celebrity Skin and Malibu), and with our history, good and indifferent, to stand together and celebrate anew means a lot. Hole and SP did many a gig together, so we are forever bonded with music and yes, familial love. Every special guest I mentioned being a part of the SP family, and we with theirs. I’ll write a separate post on MSG. Not enough room here on IG to, you guessed it, ‘Ramble On’…”
