Billy Joel has a stack of hits from the ’70s and ’80s — “She’s Always a Woman,” “Uptown Girl,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” A throwback to Tin Pan Alley songwriting in the rock ‘n’ roll era, Joel has famously played New York’s Madison Square Garden 150 times. He completed his residency there just this summer before hitting the road. Ray Charles inducted Joel into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
Meanwhile, Sting is currently touring with guitarist Dominic Miller, who has played on his solo albums, and Mumford & Sons drummer Chris Maas, a trio format that recalls the band that made Sting famous.
The Police had a remarkable run that included a No. 1 album, “Synchronicity,” and a handful of Top 10 hits, including “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” and “Every Breath You Take.” The small band should give a new spin to Sting’s solo work, which draws on jazz and world music.
When Joel and Sting played a concert in St. Louis in September, each made a cameo appearance during the other’s set. Sting played for about an hour and 15 minutes, with the set list divided about evenly between Police and solo songs. After a 30-minute break, Joel performed for a little more than two hours, with some deep cuts and covers mixed in with his better-known songs.
Billy Joel played at the venue three times with Elton John, in 1994, 2003 and 2009. He returned to play the AT&T Center solo in 2016. Meanwhile, From 1988 to 2004, Sting played San Antonio three times on tours following the release of his albums “… Nothing Like the Sun,” “The Soul Cages” and “Sacred Love.” His only appearance here with the Police was on the band’s reunion tour in 2007.
