Billy Joel’s touring future remains uncertain after the singer’s diagnosis with a rare brain disorder, but his daughter Alexa Ray Joel has offered a positive update on his recovery and what any return to the stage might look like. The comments come as fans continue to watch for news following his recent concert cancellations tied to his health.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about her father’s progress, Alexa Ray Joel said he is doing physical therapy regularly, has lost weight while sticking to a diet, and is “so resilient and committed to being healthy and proactive.”

“He’s doing physical therapy regularly and he’s doing great. He’s lost weight as he’s on his diet. I’m so proud of him,” she said. “He’s such a trooper, so resilient and committed to being healthy and proactive. He’s a fighter. He’s always been a fighter and talks in his documentary about how life’s like a fight.”

Alexa Ray Joel also said she has set protective ground rules if he performs again, urging him to stay seated at the piano rather than moving around the stage.

“Once a performer, always a performer! But health comes first,” Alexa Ray continued. “I said, ‘If you’re going to perform again, please stay seated at the piano. No throwing the microphone stand around!’”

That stance follows a brief January appearance in which the “Piano Man” returned to the stage with a covers band, signalling that he still wants to play despite ongoing health challenges.

The diagnosis, revealed last year, was described as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, a condition caused by excess cerebrospinal fluid build-up that can affect balance and cognition. In related coverage, Alternative Nation previously reported that Billy Joel ‘lost weight’ after a neurological diagnosis as he focused on recovery and lifestyle changes.

For now, the priority appears to be continued treatment and rehabilitation, with any long-term touring decisions dependent on how well he maintains stability and strength. Joel’s recent onstage return and his daughter’s update suggest the door is not fully closed, but the next steps will be shaped by health first rather than scheduling.
