U2 frontman Bono has praised Canada’s recent federal election, saying the world is impressed by how Canadians came together to reject populist politics.
In an interview with Global’s The Morning Show, the Irish singer applauded Canadian voters for choosing what he called “competence” and “thoughtful leadership” in Mark Carney. Bono said he’s long admired Canada’s multicultural values and believes the latest election result reinforces those ideals.
“I’m so happy to be speaking to you Canadians at this time in your political life,” Bono said. “The whole world is in awe of what you’ve done.”
He also made a light-hearted comment about U.S. politics, joking, “Fifty-one reasons to love Canada,” in reference to Donald Trump’s past comments about making Canada the 51st U.S. state.
Trump recently claimed on his platform, Truth Social, that Canada would have to pay $61 billion to join the U.S. “Golden Dome” missile defense system unless it agreed to become a U.S. state—at which point it would pay “zero dollars.”
The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office responded clearly, saying, “Canada is an independent, sovereign nation, and it will remain one.”
