During a recent live conversation, Dave Grohl discussed Prince covering Foo Fighters at the Super Bowl. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments.
“He (Prince) did one of our songs at the Super Bowl when he played the fucking Super Bowl, he played a Foo Fighters song. Which still to this day makes no fucking sense. You got twelve minutes and a hundred hits and you play fucking ‘Best of You.’ You’re insane!”
Grohl once jammed with Prince at a rehearsal in Los Angeles, covering Led Zeppelin.
“We go into it and it was so fucking bad ass. I was like this is fucking incredible. And the backup singers are like, ‘Whole Lotta Love.’ Like it was a whole thing. It was un fucking real. It was unbelievable.
We do the song, bam! We end the song. He’s like ‘YEAH!’ People are high-fiving, and it’s like we’re amazing, this is fucking great. And he goes, we should do that and I’m like, hell yeah we should do that! And he goes, What are you doing next week?”
I was like uhhhhhh, I guess I’m coming back to the fucking Forum for the tenth time. So then I go back to catering where my wife is still eating, I’m drenched in sweat. She’s like, ‘Where have you been?’ I’m like, ‘Jamming with Prince.’ Then we sat and watched the show again. The next week I had a fucking school fundraiser and I never got to jam with Prince again. But I got a tape!”
Dave Grohl and his mother Virginia will give a live talk together at the 2019 Canadian Music Week, Canada’s big music conference and festival that will take place in Toronto next month. The 37th annual event takes place from May 6 to May 12 at various venues around the city.
The Grohls’ discussion will be held on May 10 as part of the conference’s Keynote Speakers lineup, where mother and son will “talk about the inspiration behind her book ‘From Cradle To Stage’, her delightful meetings with music moms and what to do when your child is a talented, charismatic prodigy.” A question-and-answer session will follow afterwards.
