On March 17, 1995 Dave Grohl joined Pearl Jam onstage in Melbourne to perform Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” for the first time in his career. 23 years later, Grohl yet again performed the classic song for the first time in years, this time with Warren Haynes and Govt. Mule. It was part of Haynes’ Christmas show in Asheville, where Dave Grohl and his friends from Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age, and Jane’s Addiction debuted his 23-minute song “Play” live.

Grohl also played southern tinged versions of “Times Like These” and “Everlong” acoustic with Warren Haynes, so it was definitely a show where Grohl was a jack of all trades, as he drummed for his “Play” performance, played electric guitar on “Rockin’ in the Free World”, and then did a short acoustic set. Knowing Grohl, he probably cooked by Backbeat BBQ for everyone backstage as well!

You can watch video of Dave Grohl playing “Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World” in 1995 and 2018 below, along with video of “Everlong” and “Times Like These” acoustic. Foo Fighters are scheduled to perform at the ‘I Am The Highway’ Chris Cornell tribute show next month in Los Angeles, and tour Europe next summer following the conclusion of the Concrete and Gold North American tour.
