Eddie Van Halen bandmate Sammy Hagar revealed why he cannot often handle seeing terminally ill children despite his extensive charity work in a new ABC 7 interview. Alternative Nation transcribed his comments. Eddie Van Halen’s wife recently leaked a sad new performance video.

“I can’t solve the homeless problem, but I want to feed them, so I think that’s the simplest solution. When yo go down, you talk to them, and you see the people who are really in that line, and the food they’re giving them, really good food, the buck goes so far. So I support food banks in every city I play for the last 10 years. Every time I do a concert, I give some money to the food banks, locally.

They either come to the show, or if it’s a day off, I go down and give it and talk. So that’s how you feel it, if you just keep writing checks, [you’re not connecting to it]. You’ll feel it better by getting involved. It’s tough, you go to a hospital and see a kid that is a Make a Wish foundation thing. I’ve done it, you go down and spend an afternoon.”

The interviewer mentioned, “It’s gut wrenching, it tears you up.”

Hagar added, “I can’t do it, Is swear that is one place where I do just write the check. Every now and then I do try it again, I just tried St. Jude’s in Memphis a few months ago, and it’s too much. I’m on the phone with the family, and you cry two hours afterwards. I don’t know what good that does, Sammy Hagar on the bed crying for two hours, I can do a lot more things for the world.” Michael Anthony recently revealed why Van Halen fired him.
