Former Foo Fighters drummer William Goldsmith blamed Dave Grohl’s experiences with Kurt Cobain in Nirvana for his lack of ability to collaborate in a new Daily Mail interview.

The drummer believes Grohl’s treatment of him may have stemmed from what he went through while working with Nirvana legend Kurt Cobain.

He explained: ‘The impression I had got from people who were flies on the wall when Nirvana was recording was that Kurt had been very definite on what he wanted and Dave had to do it.’

‘I think his inability to allow people to collaborate with him after that, came from Kurt having things a certain way and him reacting to his frustrations.’

Leaving hit him hard: ‘When you spend 17 months on the road with these people and they are your family and it is suddenly gone.

‘But I was not going to sacrifice my family so I could have everyone worship me.’

‘The reason I started playing music was because it was a spiritual form of protest.’

‘It was never, ‘I am looking to get attention or make money.’

Leaving the band also meant a rupture in his friendship with Nate Mendel. ‘We had a rule we were a team – together or not at all,’ he said.

‘If he had got kicked out I would have split. I didn’t say, “dude you got to quit” but he didn’t try to defend me.’

But Goldsmith says he has ‘forgiven’ his old friend. ‘Nate has a different approach to things,’ he said.

And in what appeared to be a further dig at Grohl he added: ‘When good people don’t do anything, bad people get to do whatever they want.’
